Name Your Seat Campaign
The St. George Theatre has been home to nearly one century of memories for the Staten Island community. The following story comes from our friend and longtime supporter, Kathleen Murphy:
“On July 28, 1962, my late husband, Bill Murphy and I had our first date...I was a few weeks shy of 16 and he was 18. We went by bus to the St. George Theater from Faber Pool after his lifeguard shift. We saw Jimmy Stewart in "Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation"....and the rest is history.
A million years later, when the theater was being brought back to life, we participated in the fundraising efforts by buying plaques for the chairs we sat in on our first date (yes, I knew EXACTLY which seats!). I visited the seats and lovely plaques a few times since then while at various shows I attended. Then a few years ago, all the seats were being replaced and the old ones were available for sale....thanks to the SGT staff, I was able to get OUR seats! I had them refinished to their original beauty and I got new versions of the plaques, and I now enjoy them in my home!! At least once a day, I sit in Murph's seat and feel his presence and approval!”
